Introduction to Application Operations
Application Operations or in short AppOps comprises all functions for monitoring alerting, analysis, and administration of SAP solutions, allowing to reduce overall costs for customer with predefined content and centralized tools for all aspects of SAP Solution Manager operations. AppOps component provides integrated analytics functions, either out-of-the-box, or personalized by customers.
Thanks to Application Operation monitoring and alerting capabilities we can ensure that all managed systems by Solution Manager are in a good shape and running with out any problems or errors. Solution Manager offers several tools which allows you to have full overview of the system status as well as supporting non-SAP applications.
Technical Monitoring allows you to have an overview of the whole system including host and database with availability, performance, configuration or even exceptions. Managed systems are put up to monitoring templates which determine what checks the solution manager has to do for having the needed information up in the monitoring. Templates can be adapted and configured as needed. After a threshold, which is maintained inside the template, is exceeded, then Solution Manager sends out a alert via email if configured that way, otherwise it will display red in monitoring.
- Availability collects information about system uptime and informs if system or database is down and even host of the system.
- Performance collects information about system disk and memory usage. Moreover, it can inform system response and load times.
- Configuration allows to have information about system settings. For example, in the production system global changes are allowed, system maintenance license is expired or even failed transports on the ABAP system in any of the system on the landscape.
- Exception shows information about failed background jobs, update request errors or even when there might be failed iDOC’s or qRFC’s.
User experience monitoring (UXMon) includes the monitoring of performance and availability from an end user perspective. With UXMon, often problems can be solved before customers or users even know if something went wrong.
Job monitoring provides centralized transparency for all types of jobs. This is great tool because if there is a need to monitor only one job and get an notification immediately if a one certain job fails, then this is the use case for it.
Solution Manager with Focused Insights allows to use customized dashboards for several uses including Security Dashboard which collects data through Configuration Validation by using SAP Security Baseline as a target system and checks done by checking the compliance from the target to managed system.
End-to-End Root Cause Analysis in SAP Solution Manager offers capabilities for cross system and technology root cause analysis. It provides tools that support customers and SAP in performing a root cause analysis across different support levels and different technologies. The basic idea behind Root Cause Analysis is to determine where and why a problem occurred. With the provided toolset it is possible, regardless of the technology an application is based on, to avoid ping-pong game during an analysis between different expert groups. Overall, Root Cause Analysis works towards simplifying the problem resolution process with-in an IT environment and reducing TCO.
