News from the area of Testing with SAP SolMan Focused Build SP07

Creating test cases is not the most exhilarating task, that needs to be done in the area of testing. The more any help is appreciated that is available. With SP07 SAP improved the Test-Step Designer with the following improvements.

New (and finally SAP has implemented this) test cases can be maintained similar to the Mass Change Operations App in mass, allowing them to be displayed, analysed and edited in bulk. This creates a good overview.

The upload functionality now supports additional excel formats, which almost makes the CSV/UTF8 upload obsolete, however the nostalgics among us can still choose to edit their CSV files in excel. A language selection was added to the down- and upload possibility and the copy function was enhanced with a number of attributes.

Also, the changeability of the layout of the Test Step Designer should also be highlighted. This – albeit simple – helpful option was enhanced with a small, but helpful configuration option in SP07.

Die generally space wasting details of the test case list can now be hidden ad-hoc by the user.

The filter attribute have been increased to seven by SP seven… Pun intended 😊

Also in the background – so not immediately visible – SAP introduced a number of supporting consistency checks. For example, executables can no longer be deleted as long as they are still used in a corresponding test case AND a final test case approval now is only possible if the assigned executable is available in the target branch.

Apart from the updates in creating test cases, SAP also add new features in the area of test execution. Not only test managers, but also the testers enjoy the following enhancements.

When creating en defects from My Test Execution, the defect type can either be predefined user specific (TC: SU01->/SALM/TWL_USER_PREPS) or globally (Customising).

Creating defects is expedited and considerably simplified this way. Let’s be honest, who doesn’t mix up defect types from time to time or need to check the SID and client of the corresponding system?

Additionally, it is now possible to setup automated defect creation as soon as the test case has been set to status error.

The drag & drop functionality for test case evidence is now similarly available as for defect evidence.

The amount of uploaded attachments now is displayed in the My Defect Attachments section icon.

Last but not least: Finally, the description text of the defect will automatically include the expected and actual results texts. Saving still needs to be done by the tester, but with these new features, the workflow is considerably sped up.

In summary: With the new technical changes in Focused Build SP07, SAP focuses on improving usability for the endusers. The new features will, without a doubt support to optimise and speed up test preparation and testing activities.
