Today’s developments push towards ever shorter innovation cycles, and make ever greater demands on companies to be flexible to stay competitive. This brings along substantial IT challenges as well, in the case of mechanical parts manufacturer Ortlinghaus the running and maintenance of its SAP resource planning systems.
blueworks’ application lifecycle management (ALM) services have proved an effective way to mitigate those challenges via efficient and effective planning, development, and implementation of a company’s systems.
“blueworks have been an enormous help in every area of our SAP systems. I’d say they take care of roughly 80 percent of all our SAP-related problems, and they do it quickly and immediately.”
Ortlinghaus is a leading manufacturer of clutches, brakes, and systems for drive solutions working in Germany, Switzerland, and China. Founded in 1898, it is a fourth-generation family-run business employing more than 550 people across its locations.
With ever more challenging and specialized manufacturing Ortlinghaus excels at providing a faster and more flexible service than competitors and recently has increased focus on farm machines.
Demand is up, the company is optimistic about the future and planning accordingly.
Application lifecycle management and basis support
blueworks has provided Ortlinghaus with the Solution Manager as a Managed Service (SMaaMS) for several years, keeping the company’s systems landscape up to speed and making sure everything runs smoothly. This way, Ortlinghaus have had their Solution Manager tailor-fitted to their needs and overseen, 24/7, by a blueworks SAP expert.
While others may opt for on-prem maintenance, Ortlinghaus chose the cloud set-up yet still enjoying the full-spectrum of maintenance giving early warnings and predictive fixes, not to mention peace of mind.
Either way, this fully-customisable, subscription service has not only meant smoother SAP operations, it has also saved on in-house resources and staff-hours.
All this matters to Peter Weitgruber, in charge of Ortlinghaus’ IT systems, as he points to the importance of quality:
“These services are expensive, and it’s difficult to find a reliable consultant,” Weitgruber says. “For a business as specialized as ours, finding the right solution can take a while.”
This makes cost-effectiveness an issue, not only from the point of view of individual deals, but also the long-term maintenance and availability of support. To an SME like Ortlinghaus, the associated investments can be substantial; another motive for keeping on-premise structures lean.
Ortlinghaus: A satisfied SMaaMS customer
In an industrial environment that tends to change ever more quickly, and where innovation cycles are becoming increasingly shorter, ALM is taking on an ever greater role.
Be it keeping development costs low and timespans short, or making sure processes can run with a minimum of friction, ALM keeps it all running clean. But the associated costs to a business can be substantial, which is why it makes sense to buy these services from an external provider.
For blueworks, this has meant taking care of Ortlinghaus’ system maintenance as well as running the company’s ALM. The fact alone that Ortlinghaus have been able to leave the SAP Solution Manager to blueworks to be run, maintained, and kept up to date has been a “huge relief,” says Weitgruber.
“blueworks have been an enormous help in every area of our SAP systems. I’d say they take care of roughly 80 percent of all our SAP-related problems, and they do it quickly and immediately.”
And this has an effect on the company’s daily operations: “If you’re well taken care of, that’s half the work. You can sit back and be sure that everything is running as it should,” Weitgruber says.
When the price is up, quality needs to be up too
Meanwhile the cost both of these systems themselves as well as the associated services is substantial. According to Weitgruber, this is where blueworks really stands out.
In the area of enterprise resource planning (ERP), before a step is taken at all the consultants required alone are an investment. As Weitgruber puts it, this is where you hold on to what you know is good.
“It’s difficult to find the right consultants, and hard to find the right set-up as well,” he says. “These services are expensive throughout, so having someone reliable really matters.”
blueworks so far has been their best IT provider, and the price-quality ratio impressive, Weitgruber adds.
“Their quality has been very stable, and I can think only of positive examples concerning their work.”
