SAP partnership

When two market leaders come together to offer a joint solution, you can be sure that something great will emerge. With their innovative approach to model-based testing, they have done pioneering work and are now proud to make their solution, Tosca, available in the cloud.

SAP has been selling the Tricentis solution since 2020 and is planning a long-term roadmap with joint development. This close cooperation shows how strong the trust between the two companies is and how hard they work to offer their customers a first-class solution.

Together, these two companies have been working on SAP Cloud ALM, TTA for SAP Cloud ALM and optimal integration over the last few months. The result is impressive.

Separation of duties: SAP Cloud ALM vs. Tricentis Test Automation Cloud

Below is a brief explanation of what is available on the Cloud ALM page and the Tricentis Cloud page. Integration takes place via test automation APIs that are publicly accessible.

SAP strives for a clear separation of tasks during integration. Under SAP Cloud ALM, we have management entities for business processes, requirements, user stories and defects, all linked to manual and automated test cases. For automated test cases, SAP uses the Destination Framework and the Test Automation Endpoint with test automation APIs to connect to a test automation provider, in this case Tricentis. SAP Cloud ALM focuses mainly on orchestration, but execution is also possible from this platform. In addition, reporting and triggering of test cases are available from Tricentis in SAP Cloud ALM.

There is a corresponding Tricentis client for each SAP Cloud ALM tenant. The automated test cases are managed on the Tricentis side and only the required information is synchronized using transformation APIs. On the Tricentis side, we have the target environment for test automation, including the creation, maintenance, customization and execution of test automation.

Agents

In Tricentis Test Automation for SAP, the execution of tests is facilitated by an Automation Agent. This agent acts as a program that can be installed on your local or virtual machine or even in a container. The agents connect to your Tricentis Test Automation for SAP instance and are ready to receive and execute tests at any time.

On the Tricentis side there is an execution grid with which you can manage the agents.

There are two types of agents: On-Premise Execution Agents (Customer Landscape) and Hosted Execution Agents (TTA).

  1. On-premise execution agents are required for the tests in the customer landscape, which have on-premise systems.
  2. Hosted execution agents (TTA). There are two types of Hosted Execution Agents: Private and Shared. These agents are identical, only configured differently. You can use the private agent to run a test locally and the results of the tests are only visible to you. The shared agent, on the other hand, allows multiple users to perform tests in the same test environment.

Execution of test automation

Before you start executing your test case, make sure that the status of your test case is set to “Prepared” in the test preparation. If it is not set to “Prepared”, you will not be able to see it here.

To execute your test, you must open “Test execution” in SAP Cloud ALM.

  1. First, we may want to filter the test cases by project, scope and solution process.
  2. Another useful filter is to select “Automated” under Test cases.
  3. Press “Execute” to start your test.
  4. As soon as the test is completed, the status is set to “Failed” or “Passed”.
  5. Use the edit icon to return to “Test preparation” if required.

Open your TTA tenant from SAP Cloud ALM.

TTA for Cloud ALM can be opened by accessing your tenant or: In SAP Cloud ALM, in Test Preparation, under Test Case, click on the hyperlink with the name of your test case – in the following example: “Open Test Preparation in CALM” and a new tab will open in your browser with the Tricentis Test Automation page where you can access the test on the Tricentis side.
